Northern Westchester's Best-Kept Secret Just Got a Major Upgrade

Spacarelli’s impressive main dining room and bar

Let's be honest. Northern Westchester isn't exactly overflowing with destination-worthy dinner spots. So when we heard the Zuppa Restaurant Group had taken over the legendary Spaccarelli's in Millwood, we made the drive up Saw Mill River Road with cautious optimism. What we found completely took us by surprise.

The energy hits you the moment you walk in. The room is buzzing in that best-possible way, full, loud, and alive. The soundtrack alone sets the mood perfectly with fast paced hits from Sade, Isaac Hayes, The Weeknd, Jackson 5, and El DeBarge weaving through the dining room like a playlist curated by someone who actually understands atmosphere. The Zuppa group has given this 40-year-old institution a stunning renovation. A gorgeous new bar anchors the space, a private wine room adds a touch of occasion, and an outdoor deck makes it a year-round destination (heaters come out on chilly nights, so no excuses). It feels like a big-city restaurant that just happens to be hiding in Northern Westchester.

We settled in at the bar, where we were taken care of by Matt, a young, fun bartender with a genuine passion for the restaurant industry that came through in every recommendation and every story he shared. His enthusiasm for the place was contagious and made the whole evening feel that much more special.

The food is exactly what you'd hope for from the team behind Zuppa, Mima Vinoteca, and Tramonto. We kicked things off with the Shrimp Arrabbiata, jumbo shrimp seared in garlic oil and chili flakes, and it set the bar high. Mains were equally impressive: a beautifully delicate Branzino over shaved fennel, potato, and capers in white wine, and a deeply satisfying Chicken Cif e Ciaf with sausage, potato, cherry pepper, garlic, and rosemary. Cocktails, including their signature Zuppatini, an espresso martini, and a tequila sour, were all on point. And for dessert, a full spread of tiramisu, pillowy zeppole, NY cheesecake, and chocolate lava cake that somehow left everyone around the bar wanting a bite.

Spaccarelli's by Zuppa honors its storied past while feeling completely refreshed. It's the kind of place that makes you proud to live in Westchester and well worth the drive north.
